Homework #6 "20 Rules"

Many of these rules I have seen or used in some way but never really thought about it until now. Such as medium. I recently had to make a billboard for my principles of graphic design class. I had to work around the size because I only had so much space. My first design got cut in half when I used photofunia. (https://photofunia.com/categories/billboards) One thing I struggle with was using the right amount of effects. Sometimes I put too many or far too few. Some of these rules come very natural and I can find it in mine and many others work. Such as using the same font. I consistently use the same font during a project. It looks awkward if you don't. I feel as some of these rules are common sense while others you have to explore and find for yourself. I would recommend anyone picking up graphic design to give this a look.

Homework 6 Favorite Movie Poster

My favorite movie poster comes from the movie Kung Fu Panda. The poster brings back memories. I loved the movie and its sequels. But the first one will always have a place in my heart. The poster is very simple. It doesn't say much about the movie itself but it doesn't need to. The design is simple and looks cool. The swirl design around Po's foot looks cool. I can't say why but I have always liked this part of the poster. Sorta hypnotizing. I like the main character Po's posture as well. It reminds me of all those kung fu films you hear about or have seen when you were young. I also like how it has Jack Blacks name on the top. Jack Black is one of my favorite actors/celebrities. Seeing his name definitely got me to see the movie. The background around Po is great as well. It gives me that ancient Chinese feel . Definitely something the film shows off. I just love this poster. Simple and effective.

Movie Poster Plot

Planetary Annihilation

In the near future humans have treated the planet poorly. The earth is dying and humanity blindly ignores the signs. All except a select few. These few people try to get the government of the world to see that the planet is dying. And that they need to evacuate to one of their few colonies on earth. The government refuses. As the earth gets ready to explode the group must find a way to get as many people off the planet or die.

Homework 5 Response

Not many people get the chance that dusting had. It's great that he was able to get the job he did in  high school. It allowed him to get his foot in the door and gain experience. It's also nice that he decided to go on his own. Sometimes you need to get out there and see what you wouldn't staying with an agency. I do not know this Paul he was speaking of, but he sounds very interesting. Not cut from the same cloth as others. I find it funny the magnolia was in full bloom while they where working on there project. Those kind of opportunities don't come up that often. But when they do it can work out really well. Sometimes better than expected. The more I read the more I'm liking this Paul guy. There aren't many people that loyal. I also got to say that Dustin has some good taste. I'm glad that Dustin knows to take a break, sometimes we come up with our best ideas and designs while we are relaxing or not consciously thinking about our work. When we hit a road block sometimes we need to think outside the box. Ask ourselves a different question. Dustin has this in the bag.

Homework 4 Think Big

Response:

When I first heard that what he worked on went obsolete or the company he designed a product for went out business, I grew very scared. If a product design is that bad I don't think I would hire someone with that kind of record to design stuff for me. When he started talking about how his problem was thinking on one thing, it reminded me how I solved or failed to solve some problems. I was thinking small, getting small results. When he started talking about the transportation system it reminded me how big innovative ideas can have a great impact. I was amazed how he started talking about the integration of culture and design in India. You don't get to see that stuff in America. While I do believe faster designing processes are good, "Rome wasn't built in a day". I still think that a lot of time is needed to perfect a design or product. The final phase of a product is putting it in the hands of consumers. We can learn much from how people react to a product, and use that info to make a better product. Game companies do this when they are developing sequels for games. If they get good reception and some criticism, they can take the criticism and make a better sequel. If they get bad reception and a lot of criticism they may not be able to make a sequel, but they can use the info they got to improve their design process for future games. Its amazing what a difference thinking big can do especially for countries like India, if we all started thinking big instead of small, the possibilities are infinite.

"To the Point: Interview With Dave Perillo, aka Montygog" Response

I like how he got inspiration from the cartoons he watched as a kid. Sometimes the smallest of things we see at an early age inspire what we do later down in life. I got my inspiration to become a game designer from playing video games. I'm also glad that he knows that art doesn't always have to be serious. The game companies that inspired me have fun at conferences and when they do special promotions. If everything was serious it would get boring. I don't think I could ever self teach myself with the equipment to make video games costing way beyond my budget, but I like how Dave did both. If you just learn what others teach, how can you be original in your work? It's nice to see he uses some of the tools we are learning to use, mostly because if a popular artists uses it I think we can as well. Its nice to know he got noticed on a website such as devianart  but not many can. There are thousands of artists there posting new content everyday. He was a lucky one in a million to be noticed. I'm surprised at what he has done, even working for Disney, not many big shots can even pull that off. I'm interested in how far he can go as an artist.

Homework 2

Rethinking The Way We Sit Down

During the beginning I did't know where the guy was going. What he was trying to get across. As he went on talking I was surprised how he used what he learned making model airplanes into developing chairs. I was really surprised at the chair he made that could use your weight instead of reaching something to help you adjust the chair. I didn't think that was possible. While it can't accommodate everyone it is a genius idea. Its simple and I don't have to worry about a 20 page manual, if you get the reference from the video. I don't understand how he did some of the stuff he did with his chair such as moving both armrests at the same time or getting the head rest to move up as you recline but it is pure genius. If this was an add this guy would be taking all my money. I may question taking the bicycle seat idea for the chair but I would need to sit in it to find out how comfortable it is.

HomeWork 1

I don't Know if you wanted it on our blogs or in the comments of the homework page, so i did both.I ask more when I come to class.

How to Ruin a Great Design talks about bad designs, why there are bad, and rages on question how people could mess up these designs such as the "Diverted Cyclists" sign in London. The one in London for example has quite a few problems that the article addresses. For example how the D is way to big compared to the other letters used on the sign. The D takes more of the attention than anything else on the sign. Anyone who passes by may only notice the D. This is a poor design for a sign for cyclist. The whole sign should get your attention.
